23rd annual ACM Conference Interaction Design and Children (IDC2024)

Maria Kasinidou, a PhD candidate at the Open University of Cyprus and researcher associate at the Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency (CyCAT), participated in the 23rd annual ACM Conference Interaction Design and Children (IDC2024) Conference, held on June 17-20, 2024, in Delft, Netherlands. During the conference, Maria presented her Work in Progress paper entitled “AI is a robot that knows many things“: Cypriot children’s perception of AI” through a lightning talk and a poster presentation.
Abstract: In todayโ€™s world, children are increasingly interacting with AI technologies as part of their daily routines. However, many children may not fully grasp how these technologies function or their implications. Misconceptions about AI capabilities, risks, and benefits abound, underlining the importance of early education on the subject. Designing educational tools and materials tailored for children necessitates a deep understanding of their existing knowledge and perceptions of AI. By leveraging childrenโ€™s insights and experiences with AI, we can develop effective educational strategies that cater to their specific needs and enhance their understanding of this rapidly evolving technology.
