Algorithmic Watchdog
We are pleased to invite you to our third workshop which will explore how Algorithm Watchdogs could contribute towards the objectives of the emerging EU regulatory framework on AI.
This is the third workshop in a series where we designed a methodology for an algorithm watchdog in collaboration with experts from academia and industry based on discussions on real-world issues around algorithmic fairness, transparency, and accountability in domains such as employment and online information systems.
In this workshop, we will present this methodology and discuss how such algorithm watchdogs might operate in a regulatory environment and contribute towards the objectives of the newly proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act. This proposed regulation aims to address the benefits as well as risks that can emerge from the use of artificial intelligence systems on a European level. Amongst other things, the Act addresses the safety and law-abiding nature of AI systems placed on the EU market and the governance and enforcement of existing regulations on fundamental rights and safety requirements.
The goal of the workshop is to explore how particular tasks in the regulation can be executed in practice and how an algorithm watchdog organisation might contribute to these functions – and explore potential pathways to its establishment through a collaborative community of experts.
The workshop will include an invited talk from Michael Veale (University College London) on the proposed EU legislative framework, a presentation from Michael Rovatsos (School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh) on the proposed Algorithm Watchdog, and a roundtable panel discussion with further panelists including Gemma Galdon Clavell (Eticas Research and Consulting, Barcelona), Shannon Vallor (Centre for Technomoral Futures, University of Edinburgh) and Burkhard Schaefer (Edinburgh Law School, University of Edinburgh).
